Privacy
This site counts page views without cookies and without knowing who you are. Here is what it counts, who processes it, and how to turn it off.
Who runs this site
I am Jorge Morales Pou, based in Spain, and I run educates.dev. I decide what the site counts and why, so I am responsible for it under the GDPR. Write to me at contact@educates.dev about anything on this page.
What the site counts
The site counts page views with GoatCounter. For each page you open, GoatCounter records the page, the site that sent you there, your browser and operating system, your screen size, your country, and the campaign tags in the link you followed, such as utm_campaign. It keeps these as separate totals per hour or per day, which cannot be joined back into one visit.
The site sets no cookies. Your IP address and your browser's full user agent are never stored. To tell a new visit from a repeat one, GoatCounter keeps them in memory for up to 8 hours, tied to a random identifier, and then forgets them.
Why, and on what basis
To learn which pages people read and how they find them, so I know what to write next and what to fix. The statistics are anonymous, are not combined with any other data, and are not used for anything else.
The legal basis is my legitimate interest in measuring this site's own audience, under article 6(1)(f) of the GDPR. The Spanish data protection authority, the AEPD, exempts first-party audience measurement that only produces anonymous statistics from consent, as long as visitors are told about it, which is what this page is for. That is why the site shows no cookie banner.
Who processes the counts
GoatCounter, a service operated from the Republic of Ireland, processes the counts for me. Its servers are at Hetzner, in Finland and Germany, and it shares nothing with third parties. The statistics are kept for 25 months and then deleted, and GoatCounter's backups keep them for up to 30 days more. Its privacy policy has the details.
Turn counting off
Turn the switch off and this browser stops loading GoatCounter, so none of your page views are counted. The choice lives in this browser only, until you turn counting on again or clear this site's data.
Counting is on: this browser's page views are counted.
JavaScript is off, so this site loads nothing from GoatCounter and counts nothing from this browser.
What the site keeps in your browser
Two settings, each kept in your browser's local storage only when you choose it, and never sent anywhere:
skipgc, when you turn counting off above.theme, when you pick the light or dark theme with the theme button.
Videos
Videos in posts are hosted on YouTube. Until you press play, the page shows a picture served from this site and loads nothing from YouTube or Google. Pressing play loads the player from youtube-nocookie.com, and from then on Google's privacy policy applies to it.
Your rights
You can ask me for access to your data or its erasure, or object to the counting, by writing to contact@educates.dev. Because nothing stored identifies you, I usually cannot pick out your visits among the totals; turning counting off above is the quickest way to object. You can also complain to the AEPD, the Spanish data protection authority.
Before GoatCounter
Until , this site used Google Analytics. It no longer loads it, and the Google Analytics property receives no new data; it keeps the statistics collected before then. If you visited before that date, your browser may still hold the _ga cookies it set. This site no longer reads them, and you can delete them.
Other Educates sites
docs.educates.dev and hub.educates.dev are separate sites, and this page does not cover them.
